Membership Organisation, The Gym Group, loses 178,000 members during lockdown.
However, the group have just released information on their upcoming re-opening plans.
Gyms were forced to shut when the UK went into lockdown back in March however, Richard Darwin, CEO of The Gym Group, has said he’s looking forward to welcoming members back now that the Governments official advice has changed and gyms can start to re-open as of the 25th July (as long as correct social distancing is observed).
At the start of lockdown The Gym Group offered all of it’s members a ‘free freeze’ in which no payments would be taken whilst they were closed but despite that, there were still a large number of cancellations in the days following the UK going into lockdown, although the rate of cancelations did slow as lockdown continued.
As of the start of July The Gym Group reported their membership base stood at 692,000, compared to the 870,000 in did in March.
Despite that though, Darwin was positive about the groups 160 sites across England, with a re-opening set for July 25th. Their additional thirteen sites in Scotland and Wales will follow as soon as possible subject to local restrictions.
The Gym Group expect business to be slow to start with but commented to say it will pick back up rapidly as people return to the office and normal day to day routines.
Several Health & Safety checks have been put in place ahead of the Jul 25th opening such as, temperature checks for staff at the start of each shift and strict limits on the number of members allowed to exercise at any one time.
It’s thought as they re-open operating hours will be 6am-10pm weekdays and 8am-8pm at weekends with a few gyms trialling a 24/7 model for their members.
Opening safely is our primary concern and we have comprehensive plans in place for both our colleagues and members as we re-open our gyms...Together with the Government we recognise the significant benefits of exercise in improving the nation's physical and mental well-being, particularly at this time as we respond to the pandemic. We are encouraged by the response of our members, the vast majority of whom are keen to get back to the gym to begin working out again.
