WhatsApp Forced Into An Embarrassing Delay Over Changes To Their Privacy Policy

Mon Jan 18 2021

Controversial changes to WhatsApp’s privacy policy has resulted in users leaving the platform in droves

WhatsApp revealed last week that it had been forced to delay it’s new privacy policy by at least three months to better educate it’s users on the types of data it collected, why they collected it and how it got shared with Facebook.

The Facebook owned app released a statement explaining they’d received a lot of questions from concerned users around the ‘confusion’ its recent privacy policy had caused.

The company had updated their privacy policy earlier this month, to come into effect on the 08th Feb, which would allow it to share user data with their parent company Facebook and all of its subsidiaries.

WhatsApp users received a notification to this effect, stating they had to agree to the new terms or lose their access to the platform.

Since then however, misinformation and fake news regarding the update has been a huge worry to WhatsApp and Facebook’s executive boards, with WhatsApp commenting to say they wanted their users to "understand our principles and the facts" after millions had uninstalled the app, switching to rival platforms like Signal.

WhatsApp have been seeking to reassure anyone currently using the platform, and those that had already left since then, explaining that their end-to-end encryption model would always protect their private messages and videos from anyone and everyone (including themselves and Facebook).

They claimed that they don’t keep a record of anything sent within the chat, nor can they view it.

None of that will change with the new privacy policy. Instead, the update includes new options people will have to message a business on WhatsApp.

According to WhatsApp, they expect more and more people to start using the platform for business and the privacy policy was updated to reflect that.

All WhatsApp have ever been able to see, they say, is a user’s metadata… so information on who you’re messaging, what device you use to do so and what time you’re doing it… All of which however is information Facebook said they wouldn’t collect when they bought WhatsApp back in 2014.
