ICAEW’s Digital Transformation

The ICAEW has been the beating heart of the accountancy profession since their founding in 1880, sharing their knowledge with Governments, regulators and business leaders to ensure accountancy as a force for positive economic change worldwide.

The ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales was formed in 1880 to ensure trust in business. They ensure their members have the skills, knowledge and influence to help build economies that are sustainable, accountable and fair.

Who Are The Institute Of Chartered Accountants, England & Wales (ICAEW)?

There are over 150,000 Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and the ICAEW train, develop and support all of them.

Their mission statement is to ensure they all their members have the knowledge and values to create stable, sustainable, accountable and fair local and global economies.

The ICAEW has been the beating heart of the accountancy profession since their founding in 1880, sharing their knowledge with Governments, regulators and business leaders to ensure accountancy as a force for positive economic change worldwide.

Reasons For Change

When an organisation has existed since 1880, they’ll naturally have accumulated a staggering amount of historic data and processes which have had to be shifted from paper records to technology to new technology as times have progressed.

That sprawl of data, systems and the sheer number of their members meant that the ICAEW were operating within a miasma of processes and systems which would have to be untangled to move the organisation forward.

The ICAEW decided to take the brave approach of truly transforming their services by redesigning all their business and technical processes from the ground up so as to drastically improve the levels and speed of service they provide to their members, right across the board.

To do this, they’d need to take a completely new approach to their infrastructure and IT service delivery.

To ensure this ‘clean slate’ approach the ICAEW wanted an independent partner to work with them to assess which applications were critical, where data was hosted and re-engineer the infrastructure to give newfound efficiency and flexibility.

The partner the ICAEW chose for this project was cloudThing.

Working in close collaboration cloudThing and ICAEW identified that the main objectives of the project were:

  • Assess current IT estate.
  • Establish key business processes.
  • Establish business critical applications.
  • Business and technical architecture to move to a cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Clear roadmap to migrate applications and services to Azure.
  • Ongoing support and development for incremental improvement and fixes.
